The 27th Annual ASP meeting will be hosted by the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) and the Department of Anthropology on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Joseph W. Kemnitz, Director of WNPRC, is the Chair of the local arrangements committee and Ms. Edith (Edi) Chan is the Conference Coordinator (chan@primate.wisc.edu). All scientific sessions will take place in the Memorial Union - a center for faculty and student activities. The Memorial Union is located on the shores of Lake Mendota.
The UW-Madison is ranked among the top American universities in both research and teaching. Amenities available on or near the scenic University campus include restaurants, banks, shops and laundromats, a University sports complex, and easy access to public transportation. You may wish to spend some time before or after the conference vacationing in Madison or outlying areas. Information will be available before the meeting and at registration. The Madison Chamber of Commerce has information about dining and shopping in the Madison area.
Madison is a recreational paradise and Wisconsin's beautiful capital and second largest city. Madison has four lakes, 100 miles of bike trails and 200 parks. Visitors can enjoy abundant cultural and social activities. A one-mi pedestrian mall (State Street) links the Capitol Square to the beautiful lakeside campus. The Howard M. Temin Lakeshore Path is a favorite route to and from campus for walkers and bicyclists. The path runs 1.6 miles along Lake Mendota (www.ies.wisc.edu/cna/path.htm.)
Climate: Temperatures in June range from 65°F/ 18°C (morning) to 80°F/ 27°C (mid-day). The weather is usually pleasant and occasional rainfall is possible. Be prepared for rain; bring along a raincoat and a sweater. Dress is casual and light clothing is advisable due to the time of year. The Congress will be informal. Be prepared for temperatures that range from pleasant outdoor temperatures to air-conditioning in most buildings.
back to topTuesday, June 8, 2004: On-site registration for the meeting will begin at 8 a.m. Primate illustrator, Stephen Nash, will speak on Primates in Art and open an exhibit of his work in the evening. His talk will be followed by hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and music by Brian Whitty in the Memorial Union.
Wednesday, June 9, 2004: The scientific meeting will open at 8:00 am with the 2004 keynote address by Dr. Joan Silk. Papers will follow until 5 p.m. A wine and cheese reception/open house will be held at the Wisconsin Primate Center Library from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Everyone is invited, but please indicate whether you plan to attend on the registration form. Poster session will take place from 7pm to 9pm.
Thursday, June 10, 2004: Dr. Karen Bales, recipient of the Burroughs-Welcome Award, will speak in the morning, followed by scientific papers. Pulitzer-prize winning science writer, Professor Deborah Blum, will speak after lunch. Scientific meetings will continue until 5 pm, with the second poster session from 7pm to 9pm. The 2nd annual softball game will begin following the poster session. Please bring a mitt if you would like to play, or just come and cheer on your favorite team.
Friday, June 11, 2004 2003 Distinguished Primatologist, Dr. Donald Lindburg, will speak at mid-day. Scientific meetings will take place in the morning and until 5 pm. The closing banquet will be held in the evening in Great Hall. Blues music will be provided by Clyde Stubblefield and his band after the banquet.
The registration fee includes coffee breaks, continental breakfasts and lunches Wednesday through Friday, afternoon breaks, opening reception, closing reception, poster session refreshments, and abstract booklet and program. Breakfast will be served near the lecture halls; lunch will be held in Tripp Commons at Memorial Union. Coffee, soda and water will be provided daily during the breaks. Coffee and other refreshments can also be purchased at the Memorial Union at various locations and at vendor carts in the Library Mall (across the street from the Memorial Union).
Name badges will be required for all sessions and social activities.

back to topAir travel: Make travel arrangements to the Dane County Regional Airport, Madison, Wisconsin (northeast side). The airport is served by more than 100 daily flights with one-stop connections to 600 domestic cities and 70 international cities. The following commercial airlines serve Dane County: American Eagle (American), Comair (Delta), Midwest Express (Skyway), Northwest Airlines, Trans World Express (TWA), United Express (United), Chicago Express/American TransAir. Many airlines offer a special discount for a Saturday night stay over.
Shuttle service is provided from the airport to most hotels. Please contact the Information Desk located at the Dane County Airport. A taxi to the Memorial Union from Dane County Airport (for one person) is approximately $12.00.
Bus travel: Van Galder/Alco Bus runs from Chicago, O'Hare airport to the Memorial Union, Madison (800-747-0994; (608) 257-5593). Bus fare with Van Galder/Alco Bus Co. is currently $22.00 each way for a 3-hour trip. The bus leaves at the lower level of O'Hare Airport (Chicago) and stops at the Memorial Union. Travel by Car: Madison is conveniently located off Interstates I-90 and I-94 with easy access to Chicago (2 1/2 hours, 150 miles), Milwaukee (90 minutes, 75 miles) and Minneapolis-St. Paul (4 1/2 hours, 270 miles). Transportation & Parking in Madison: The Madison Metro provides bus service to the Madison area. The L-route is a special free year round bus route just for the University of Wisconsin campus running several times hourly through campus. Public parking is available in Madison municipal hourly parking ramps close to the Conference site. Lake Street ramp is located two blocks from the Memorial Union. University Housing: Reservations are being taken for accommodations in Witte Hall, a University residence hall located at 615 West Johnson Street, conveniently located near the Wisconsin Union meeting site. Rooms are available either as doubles or singles, all with single/twin beds. Witte Hall will be open to receive guests beginning on Monday, June 7, 2004 at 12:00 Noon and will be available to check in and out anytime through departure on Sunday, June 13, 2004 by 11:00 a.m. Internet connections are available in the guest rooms for your laptop computer. All rooms are air-conditioned and have a small refrigerator. Private telephones are provided in each guest room. Rooms will be cleaned, beds made and towels changed daily. Televisions are located in floor dens. Laundry facilities are provided in the building for a nominal fee. Sleeping rooms do not have private bathrooms. Guests receiving calls should instruct friends and family to call (608) 262-7850 during their conference. The nightly rate for a double room is $36.25 per person and for a single room is $53.50 per person. No parking is available at Witte Hall. Cut-off date for making reservations is May 7, 2004. Banking: Most banks are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are no banking services at the Dane County Airport. The Memorial Union accepts traveler's checks through the Cashier's office on the First Floor. Childcare: Due to insurance requirements, the Congress will not have organized childcare. A list of professional childcare providers/centers and costs can be provided on request.
