Application for the ASP Student Travel Awards

Deadline: 29 January 2010

Student travel awards are available from ASP this year. These awards take 2 forms:

First, all active students are eligible for $500.00 awards to offset the cost of travel, and accommodation for the 2010 meeting courtesy of the ASP student travel fund supported by donations to the society in the memory of Gerald C. Ruppenthal. Additional funding for these awards is provided by Carter2 Systems Inc. Carter2 Systems Inc. donates $5.00 for every "Rupe"rch (Gerry's last invention) they sell during the year to the student travel fund. Second, Watts Student Travel Awards in the same amount are available to students specifically from Mexico and other Caribbean and South or Central American countries.

The awards are designed to help student who would otherwise not be able to attend the meeting.

Award Criteria:

  1. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Students must be presenting work as a first author.
  2. Each applicant must be currently enrolled as a bona fide student and be a member of ASP.

On-line grant submission: Once you have registered for the conference and submitted your abstract, you will have the opportunity to apply for the travel award by clicking on the appropriate link from the Members Only section.

Before you start the on-line submission process, please download and fill out the Ruppenthal Travel Award Application or the Watts Travel Award Application.

For an ASP Student Travel Award, you will need one letter of recommendation. At the time you submit your grant application online, the online system will request the email addresses of your letter writer and automatically email him or her with instructions on how to submit a letter. Your letter writer does not have to submit his/her letter of recommendation by the grant application deadline. However, to ensure that the letters are received in time for review, referees should submit their letters no later than 2 weeks after the grant application deadline.

To complete the Awards application, you will be asked to:

  1. Upload the completed Travel Award application, which is a Word document. This application will include a paragraph that describes your need for the award, the title of your abstract, and your current CV.
  2. Supply the email address and name of your research advisor or laboratory director. The letter should address the level of independence of your contribution to your ASP presentation.

Complete materials and abstract must be received by the abstract due date: January 29, 2010. The Board of Directors has established ad hoc committees consisting of members-at large, members of the local arrangements committees, members of the BOD to decide on recipients for both awards. If you apply and do not win an award and this prevents you from traveling to and participating in the 2010 conference then ASP will refund your registration fees.
