Burroughs Wellcome Fund - American Society of Primatologists

Young Investigator Award

Application Deadline: 1 October 2002

Thanks to a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund,  the American Society of Primatologists is pleased to announce the availability of a Young Investigator Award (YIA).  Developed in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the American Society of Primatologists, the award is designed to facilitate the career transition from student/apprentice to independent researcher for a new- or recently-graduated scientist in any area of biological or biobehavioral science.

The Young Investigator Award will provide the successful applicant with a $10,000 grant.  The award could be used for equipment, supplies, salary, or research-related travel, and no indirect costs are included.  Applicants must have received a Ph.D, M.D., or D.V.M. degree within five years of the time of application.  All institutions receiving awards must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations.

The narrative of the application should:

  1. describe a career development plan incorporating the candidate's immediate research objectives and long-term career goals,
  2. highlight the potential contributions of the candidate's research to biological or biobehavioral science,
  3. explain how the YIA would contribute to the attainment of the applicant's research and career goals, and
  4. link the research objectives to the missions of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the American Society of Primatologists (see below).

The application should be written according to NIH formatting guidelines:

http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/section_1.html#format_specifications

The application must contain the following:

  • a title page and a 300-word abstract;
  • no more than five (5) pages of narrative text addressing the four points described above, excluding literature cited;
  • an NIH-style Biosketch;
  • a letter from an established investigator in the applicant's field attesting to the scientific merit of the applicant and the career development program, and;
  • a letter from department chair, dean, or supervisor indicating the willingness of the applicant's institution to support the applicant's career development goals.

Applications will be evaluated on several criteria:

  1. Merit of the proposed research and career development plan
  2. Congruence with the goals of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund1 and the American Society of Primatologists2:

1The Burroughs Wellcome Fund (www.bwfund.org) is an independent private foundation whose mission is to advance the medical sciences by supporting research and other scientific and educational activities.

2The American Society of Primatologists (www.asp.org) promotes and encourages the discovery and exchange of information regarding primates, including all aspects of their anatomy, behavior, conservation, development, ecology, evolution, genetics, husbandry, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, systematics, and use in biomedical research.

Applications will be screened by an ad-hoc committee of the ASP Executive Committee.  Complete applications are due 1 October 2002, and a decision will be announced on 1 November 2002.  The awardee will receive formal recognition of the award at the annual meeting of the American Society of Primatologists in Calgary, Alberta in August 2003.  Please send application materials and inquiries to:
