ASP Student Competition Guidelines

The American Society of Primatologists Education Committee (ASPEC) will hold the annual Student Competition sponsored by the American Journal of Primatology at the 2018 ASP meetings in San Antonio, Texas. First and Second Place Oral and Poster presentations may be awarded Prizes, as may Honorable Mention prizes for each type of presentation.
  • Outstanding Oral & Poster Presentations: $150 cash prize & 1 year ASP student membership; AJP award
  • Honorable Mention Oral & Poster Presentations: $100 
General Process:
1.     Students* must register for the annual meeting in order to submit their work to the annual competition. During the registration process, students must select the box indicating they will participate in the student competition.
2.     The deadline to submit applications is March 17, 2018.

4.     Written summaries will be reviewed prior to the annual meeting in a blind fashion by the members of the ASP Education Committee.
5.     The top 5-7 written summaries for each category (oral and poster) will be selected for in-person judging at the annual meeting. Finalists will be notified prior to the meeting whether or not their abstract has been selected for judging. Student finalists are also expected to participate in a 2-minute Data Blitz at the opening of the meeting to publicize and succinctly describe their project.
6.     Oral and poster presentations of finalists will be judged by the members of the ASP Education Committee at the annual meeting, and the award recipients will be announced and prizes awarded at the Closing Banquet.
Eligibility: To be eligible for a prize, a paper or poster must meet the following criteria:
1.     The first author must be a student registrant* of the ASP meeting who has not previously won a prize for a paper or poster presented at the annual meeting. Student membership is strongly encouraged. Students may become members or renew membership at
2.     Individuals who have completed all terminal degree requirements before the abstract submission deadline are ineligible for a student prize.
3.     The written summary and the project to be presented must be primarily the work of the first author(s).
4.     The Program Committee must have accepted the abstract for either an oral or poster presentation.
5.     The student must personally make the oral or poster presentation. Co-PI’s are not permitted for oral presentations. If there is more than one co-PI for a poster submission, BOTH students must attend the poster session if they wish to be considered equal partners on the submission.

NOTE: If the student cannot attend the meeting to which an abstract has been submitted, the abstract should be withdrawn in writing to the ASPEC Co-chairs, Dr. Karen Hambright and Dr. Mike Reid (education@asp.orgno less than 5 days before the start of the meeting. If the student wishes to withdraw from the competition, but still present the paper/poster, the ASPEC Chairperson should be notified of this change no less than 5 days before the start of the meeting.
6.     The full application must be mailed electronically to by 5:00 p.m. EDT on March 17, 2018.
Application Process: A written summary of your presentation, following the guidelines below, should be submitted online at by March 17, 2018.
1.     Cover Letter: Provide a cover letter that also explains the following as relevant: 1) If the paper is multi-authored, state the contributions of each of the authors in terms of intellectual and/or methodological investment; 2) If two student co-authors contributed equally to the paper, and want to be considered as co-principal investigators (PI’s) of the paper, indicate that this is the case. Should they win an award, they will each receive a check for half the amount of the total award.
2.     Summary: Provide a brief summary of your podium or poster presentation in up to 1000 words (approx. 2 pages, single-spaced, 12pt font, 1-inch margins), excluding references. You may use diagrams, graphs or pictures if you wish, but the total length of your summary should not exceed 3 pages if these are included. Referencing, tables, and figure captions should follow the AJP style. Organize your summary under the following headings: 1) Research questions or hypotheses; 2) Background to questions, including the rational and significance of the hypothesis; 3) Methods used to answer the questions; 4) Results; 5) Discussion; 6) Conclusions; 7) References

*Regarding Criterion #1 above, the ASPEC would like to emphasize that this competition is intended to judge work that is conceived, developed, and conducted by students/trainees. We recognize the valuable contribution of professors and fellow students, and for that reason will accept multi-authored papers. However, we encourage participants to take seriously the notion that this is a student competition. As such, entries will be limited to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as post-baccalaureate trainees who have not yet enrolled in graduate school.
Review and Decisions: The ASP Education Committees judges the written summaries and the visual/oral presentations given at the joint meeting for quality of study design and clarity of presentation. Written summaries will be judged in a blind fashion prior to the meeting, and the top 5-8 finalist projects in both Oral and Poster presentations will be judged in person at the meeting. Student competition winners will be encouraged to submit their work to the American Journal of Primatology for publication. Competition winners will be listed in the following year's meeting issue of the journal, and their abstracts will be published on the Society's web page and in the AJP’s annual abstract issue.
