The ASP Education Committee is participating in an outreach activity with the local San Diego School District to introduce elementary students to primates and primatology careers. For years, the ASP Education Committee has run special workshops for K-12 teachers, in an effort to bring an appreciation for primates into our classrooms. This year members of the ASP education committee will be visiting Doyle Elementary School in San Diego to work with elementary students and teachers. The teachers will get the choice of either career day type activities or hands on exercises to learn about primates. Career day activities will encourage student discussion regarding science and math careers, as well as introducing more specific field and laboratory careers of primatologists. Hands on exercises will be inquiry driven activities to encourage learning about primate diversity, behavior, and conservation. Both presentation types will include a focus on how to incorporate primatology into current activities to encourage inquiry-based learning and excite children about science and math, while continuing to fulfill California State Science Standards. Presentations will vary from twenty to sixty minutes based on teacher availability and needs in the classroom.
