THE USE OF ACCELEROMETERS AS A WELFARE MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR CAPTIVE SQUIRREL MONKEYS (SAIMIRI) AND OWL MONKEYS (AOTUS)

     Accelerometer activity monitors, typically used in large mammals and other Old World non-human primates, are non-invasive devices that record continuous data including number of steps, activity counts, and energy expenditure. Monitoring activity can be a valuable physiological indicator of well-being in captive primates as decreased or excessive locomotion can be indicators of illness or abnormalities. We have incorporated the use of accelerometers to assess the efficacy of management interventions (such as clinical treatments, quality of life assessments, and social and developmental changes) in four primates (2 Saimiri; 2 Aotus). While clinical assessments often rely on subjective ratings and measures, activity monitors allow for quantifiable results that can be collected continuously for several weeks. Since the devices are small and do not interfere with normal animal movements, they can be attached around the neck like an identification tag. We have used accelerometer data to determine the efficacy of clinical/surgical treatments, medication changes, and innovative methods of treatment like acupuncture and laser therapy by comparing before and after activity without having to change environmental or social conditions. Results, such as increased number of daily steps, illustrated the benefits of acupuncture and laser treatments which may have not been observed utilizing other methods. Overall, accelerometers can be a time-efficient and accurate method of assessing treatments or changes in the captive management and enable us to monitor well-being.
