Harlow's famous "cloth mother" studies, done at the University of Wisconsin in the mid-20th century, were a major influence in changing mainstream psychology from a profession that argued that love and affection were meaningless to a profession that now argues the exact opposite. Among the issues raised in the talk will be an exploration of why Harlow's primate studies were so important in changing perceptions of human behavior and why - despite their beneficial influence - their author became demonized by the animal rights movement.
